Feature Friday: Holtkamp Winery and Vineyard
My parents may not be as adventurous of eaters as Hubs and I are, but when they tell you a place is good, you can bet it's going to be yummy. And when they tell you it's good food AND good wine, you can bet Hubs and I are going to check it out!
Last week my mom texted my sister and I that Holtkamp Winery in Sunman, Indiana was serving brick oven pizza and hosting live entertainment on Sunday and wanting to know if we all wanted to meet there for the afternoon. The response was a resounding yes and I'm so glad we went! The pizza and wine were delicious, the weather was beautiful and the music was fun and upbeat without being too loud. It made for a perfect Sunday afternoon and I can't wait to go back.
Holtkamp Winery opened in 2013, a full 11 years after Doug Holtkamp started making wine independently. He teamed up with Jeff McCann, who had over 35 years of experience in wine making and grape growing, and the two have become a great team making even greater wine. The families bring in 7 different varieties of grapes from California in addition to growing 16 varieties locally, allowing them to make a diverse collection of delicious wines.
The tasting room was closed when we visited, due both to the event going on and the current need for social distancing, but that didn't keep the staff from allowing me to sample a wine before purchasing a bottle along with our pizza and heading to the beautiful outdoor seating.
My parents arrived early and secured us a picnic table, but others brought lawn chairs and spread out on the beautiful rolling lawn and around the pond. Many brought games, coolers and outside food and all were welcome to sit and enjoy the music and the beautiful weather. We ran into several friends and the whole atmosphere just felt like a giant family picnic!
Our family ordered several rounds of pizza and wine to share so we always had hot food and cool drinks. Try as I might, the food and drinks were so delicious that I never did get a picture before a slice was grabbed or a glass was poured! But when pizza is this good, it looks delicious even when there's some missing!
The tasting room is open Wednesday through Friday, 12:00-5:00, Saturday 12:00-8:00 and Sunday 12:00-7:00 and pizza and live music are available during events, as outlined on their website. Oh, and get this - you can buy their wines at my favorite butcher shop!
