Tip Tuesday: COVID-19

In these times of uncertainty and social distancing, my usual lighthearted tone feels a little flip and disrespectful.  That said, we're hearing about Coronavirus everywhere and I don't need to be one more person reminding you to wash your hands.  What I will do, though, is take this opportunity to talk about community.

Real Estate is a social industry.  We bring in business by getting our name out there, building relationships and earning trust.  Our clients become friends, our friends become family and everyone becomes a potential client.  We go to local businesses.  We forge partnerships.  We blog about those businesses and they share our blog for a type of cross promotion.  We have a deep respect for small businesses, because we are one.

I have been working with Susan Knabe of Haus & Home, an online magazine, for several weeks now to get my Feature Friday posts published with their magazine.  It has been a long, educational and actually really fun process and yesterday I got to see it all come to life, as my first two articles were published!  I shared them to my Facebook and Instagram, tagging the local businesses I had featured and the neatest thing happened.

Not only did many of my followers thank me for some positivity during this difficult time, but in under 35 minutes, the owner of Big Four Cafe commented on my post.  She thanked me for my kind words and the much needed morale boost on the day Indiana announced that restaurants and bars would be closing.  She also reminded us that BatesvilleToGo does deliver Big Four's delicious food.

Yes, with social distancing restaurants have been closed, open houses have been cancelled, school is out and showings are few and far between, but we are still a community.  We still work together and we still support each other.

If you are lucky enough to be able to work from home with no disruption to your income, buy a gift card to a local business, order take out or make a point to shop local.  If you're like me and your income has all but halted because of social distancing, take this opportunity to support small businesses in another way.  Send a note to your hairdresser reminding her that you recognize she's struggling right now.  Write a review of a few of your favorite local businesses so those who can will order delivery.  Most importantly, keep it positive.  I'm bummed about closings being delayed and missing the chance to be in the office, but I'm loving saving my commute time to work around the house or just relax.  Everyone is struggling and adapting right now, but the true test of character is in how you react.
