Feature Friday: Big Four Cafe
My husband and I are kind of foodies, and we especially like to check out locally owned places. We moved to Batesville from Lawrenceburg in October and although it feels like we're right down the road, it's amazing to me how many local restaurants there are I'd never heard of.
Having lived so close all my life there were several restaurants we'd been to before and knew we would frequent, but we also made a list of places we'd never gone and wanted to try. Near the top of that list was Big Four Cafe, located in the old Romweber furniture factory. The restaurant is named for the Big Four Railroad and Big Four Tavern, which serviced Batesville from the late 1800s until 2011, when the building was damaged beyond repair in a storm. Although it was a sad loss, Big Four Tavern paved the way for Big Four Cafe and the tavern doors are now part of the cafe.
The restaurant focuses on fresh, local ingredients, which I love, and has been named "Best Breakfast & Lunch Restaurant" as well as "Best Chef". With such high accolades, I had high expectations, and this place did not disappoint!
Hubs had the biscuit and gravy benedict. I have to be honest, it didn't sound like something I would like but it looked so good when it arrived I just had to try it. It was surprisingly good and Hubs really enjoyed it. The gluten free pancakes were entirely Karen-friendly (I've NEVER had that at a restaurant with my weird allergies). Given my gluten free experiences I didn't have high hopes, but I ordered one on the side of my breakfast skillet wanting to give it the benefit of the doubt. Oh. My. Goodness, was it the best pancake I've ever had! And I had real pancakes before I realized what my allergies are!

I could go on and on, but this Feature Friday, just know you need to try it for yourself!
Big Four Cafe is open from 7:00am-2:00pm daily for breakfast and lunch but they also do a monthly diner that I can't wait to check out. It's a 4 course meal and it's different every month, with the menu being dictated by fresh, local ingredients. I haven't made it yet, but you can bet I'll be featuring Big Four again once I do.
